Accessibility statement

We want this website, and our screenings, to be usable by as many people as possible. Here is the state of play, honestly described.

What we aim for

We aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AAA site-wide. AAA is the highest WCAG conformance level: it goes beyond the Web Accessibility Directive baseline of AA, and means 7:1 contrast for body text, a visible focus indicator on every interactive element, full reduced-motion support, and no reliance on colour alone to convey information. We hold ourselves to this standard even though, as a voluntary society, we are not strictly required to.

What works well

  • Every page uses a logical heading order and a clear single-column reading flow.
  • Body text is set at 16px or larger; line length is capped so a paragraph reads easily.
  • Colour contrast meets WCAG 2.2 Level AAA for all text (7:1 for body, 4.5:1 for large text).
  • The site works at 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling or content loss.
  • All controls are reachable and operable from the keyboard, with a high-contrast visible focus ring on every element.
  • A “Skip to main content” link appears for keyboard users on first Tab.
  • Images that carry meaning have descriptive alt text; decorative images are marked as such.
  • No motion is essential to using the site; we fully honour prefers-reduced-motion and disable all transitions when it is set.
  • The site does not rely on colour alone to convey information (past screenings are marked with a tick, dimming, and strikethrough).

Where we know we fall short

  • Film trailers and stills embedded from third parties (YouTube, Vimeo) inherit those services’ accessibility limitations. We always provide a text synopsis on the same page.
  • PDF programme notes, where we publish them, are not always fully tagged for screen readers. We are working through the back catalogue.
  • Captions and subtitles at our screenings depend on the print supplied by the distributor. We flag CC-available and SDH-available screenings on the programme page; where neither is available, we say so honestly.

Accessibility at our venues

  • Áras Éanna, Inis Oírr is accessible; ferries to the island have limited capacity for wheelchairs and we recommend ringing Aran Island Ferries in advance.

Telling us when something is broken

If you find a barrier on this site, please email enquiries@galwayfilmsociety.ie with the page and a short description. We aim to respond within five working days, and to fix substantive issues within 30 days. If your problem is urgent (you cannot use the site to buy a ticket, for instance) say so and we will phone you back.

Enforcement

If you have raised an accessibility issue with us and you are not satisfied with how we responded, you may contact the National Disability Authority (NDA), which monitors the Web Accessibility Directive in Ireland: nda.ie.
