Galway Film Society is a volunteer-run committee programming arthouse and international cinema for Galway audiences. Founded in 1964 and run by committee ever since.

Our history

GFS was founded in 1964 and has been programming films in Galway ever since. The Society survived the censorship pressures of the 1980s, the closure and reopening of venues, and the gradual change in what world cinema even means. What has not changed is the format: a small committee, a programme of six or eight films a season, and a coffee afterwards in the foyer.

How we work

Films are chosen by a committee of volunteers who watch widely and disagree often. We programme on quality and on conversation, not on box-office potential. Patron membership funds the difference between what we can charge and what films cost to license, and our funding partners cover the rest.

Become a patron
